Can file types be changed on itunes downloads

When I choose to save them, it saves them as file type "iTunes Music Player" and creates a copy of my iTunes library. The file shows up labeled however I save it, but when I try to open it, it is my iTunes library rather than whatever file I attempted to download. Can anyone help?
